Come cozy up with us at Lulu's for a special and unique holiday set of music with Megan Burtt and her band. A Winter's Eve features Megan’s holiday originals, new versions of old holiday favorites, deep cuts and some musical surprises. We look forward to celebrating the year’s past and cheering in the new one to come. Local favorite Edie Carey kicks off the evening.
Megan Burtt has returned with Witness, her first solo album since. The Colorado-based performer, a past Kerrville NewFolk Competition winner who also performed with the all-redhead roots band Gingerbomb, had been working on the project for years, but hit delays with illness and false starts. She really began to unlock new levels in her songwriting when she decided to stop dancing around what she really wanted to say. “I discovered that’s a side of myself I like as a songwriter.,” she says. “It’s become a sensibility that I know how to rest in.”
The results were a long time coming, but they’re worth the wait. With unfailing honesty and vulnerability, Burtt—who self-produced the project—wrestles with weighty topics like the burden of her own aspirations (“Drugstore Brand”), generational trauma (“Little Girls”), and the end of an important relationship (“Unfinished Business,” “Good for You”). She also does it while mixing in doses of groove and pop smarts that make the lyrics hit even harder. Ultimately, even though she addresses thorny topics, there’s a sense of hope on Witness. “These songs are more real because hidden in them is the belief that there’s a silver lining,” Burttsays. “I’m not ignorant to the shitstorm you have to endure to get there. I am a little jaded, but I am really hopeful too. I enjoy the pursuit of it all.”
“Edie Carey’s The Veil is a direct hit to the solar plexus…jaw-dropping lyricism…” – The Independent
Colorado-based singer-songwriter Edie Carey is known for her unmistakable, soulful voice, her intelligent, heart-grabbing songs, but perhaps most especially for her warm, engaging presence on - and off - stage. As much a part of her show as the music itself, Edie's wry humor makes audiences feel as though they have just spent an evening with a very close friend.
Edie Carey has been touring internationally since 1999, singing alongside Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile and appearing on Public Radio International’s syndicated Mountain Stage as well as Cayamo, Telluride Bluegrass, and Newport Folk Festivals. Her lullaby project with award-winning songwriter Sarah Sample won Best Children’s Album in the 2015 Independent Music Awards, and she was a featured vocalist along with Lisa Loeb on the 2020 Grammy-Winning ensemble All the Ladies. Americana Highways called her 2022 solo studio release The Veil “one of the best of the year” and Basic Folk listed it as #4 on their “Top 10 of 2022” alongside Grammy-nominees Anais Mitchell and Aoife O’Donovan. In the fall of 2024 she released Lantern In The Dark: Songs of Comfort and Lullabies, her 2nd duo album with Sarah Sample. Their first ever co-written song, "In My Arms," recently won 2nd place in the Children's category of the 2024 International Songwriting competition, along with Grammy nominees Fyütch and Lucy Kalantari.
